When someone reaches age 60, his (or her) eyes need three times more light to see clearly in the dark than they did when he was 20. As the eyes age, the cornea can develop cataracts and other degenerative eye diseases. This change in vision scatters incoming light and produces glare, which makes reflective road signs, streetlights and oncoming vehicles’ headlights a challenge to manage. It can also make it difficult to judge distance and speed. As this condition persists, you would be wise to see an optometrist.

That being said, here are some tips to help you manage driving in the dark. 

• Dirty car windows increase glare and reduce visibility. Clean their inside and outside surfaces.
• Avoid looking into the headlights of oncoming cars. Doing otherwise can leave you a bit dazed for up to five seconds. 
• If your headlights are covered in dirt and grim, their brightness and range will be compromised. Cleaning them with a mixture of baking soda, warm water and a sponge works well. 
• Dim your dashboard’s lights, as their brightness can impede your vision. 
• Don’t drive when you’re tired. Drowsy drivers cause a lot of accidents every year. 
• Reduce your speed and increase the distance between yourself and those around you.
