Some parents are not aware of the fact that their very young children can have or develop eye problems. Amblyopia—informally called “lazy eye”—can be one of those disorders. It’s when one or both eyes lose or lack the development of clear vision.
At the office of Fabulous Optical, our skilled and expert optometrists use their extensive knowledge of the ocular system and the complexities of the eye to treat amblyopia and many other conditions. Our team is made up of friendly, highly trained specialists who are eager to help you feel comfortable and relaxed while receiving the very best in optometric care.
Amblyopia usually develops before a child is 6 years old and is frequently related to crossed eyes. It’s also associated with a large disparity in the extent of shortsightedness (also known as nearsightedness or myopia) or farsightedness (also known as hyperopia) between the two eyes. Amblyopia doesn’t affect either eye’s peripheral vision.
Though the condition’s symptoms aren’t always recognizable, some indications are when a child obviously favors one eye over the other or has a propensity to run into things that are on one side of his/her body. And because amblyopia’s indicators aren’t always obvious, it’s important for a child to get a comprehensive optometric examination by the time he’s 6 months old and again when he turns 3. Early diagnosis increases the chance of a complete recovery.
Treatment for amblyopia can include vision therapy, using an eye patch a combination of prescription eyeglass lenses. Vision therapy involves patients learning how to use their eyes jointly, which helps prevent the malady from returning.
The office of Fabulous Optical is committed to the health of all of our patients. We’ve earned the trust of all of our clients and look forward to earning yours. For more information about our practice and the many services we provide, please don’t hesitate to call us today!
